Download this deeply melodic set by JA Levieux and Cid Surco playing live at Maze’s Birthday 2018. The duo graced one of Soweto’s respected DJ’s, Maze, on his birthday gig with a set fusing all the good sounds a House music fan would not dare miss.

Mazambane, Mr Pain, DJ Maze or Maze as he is usually called, celebrated his birthday at Dobsonville’s Disoufeng Pub on 20 January 2018. He is well respected for his precise mixing, unique Deep House song selections and thinking ahead. His sharp skill on the decks stems from ama-groetman like DJ Mostumi, who would cut-off a DJ’s set, if edlala amahhashi.

When it comes to coordinating events, Mr Pain is part of The Soweto Deep House Festival organisers and is the brains behind DeepTechishi. The latter became popular for introducing Deep Tech ekasi. Most DJ’s and fans hadn’t accepted this sound, he soldiered on regardless. These gigs were and are different, from their abstract flyers to the line-up and crowd (consisting a mixture of coloureds, blacks and whites).

On this night, he got omakoya be-namba to bless the attendees. Siso K, SoulCentric and Tiko (on percussion), Shervaan Bergsteedt, Thami 537, MrVeta, and JA Levieux and Cid Surco were on his line-up.

JA Levieux and Cid Surco were the first ones Funsion got on tape. They’ve been playing back-to-back and sharing line-ups for nearly three years. From kicking it at False Start Thursdays in Greenside to laying sets alongside Floyd Lavine, bhuti 2Lani The Warrior and legendary Charles Webster.

Their set had a bit of everything deep. Uzozwa elements of Minimal, Deep House, Afro Tech and Tech. The melodies ranged from high tempo keys, mellow percussion and dark patterns. Vocal samples or ad-libs were heard now and then.
