Nkosinathi Maphumulo, popularly known by his DJ and producer name Black Coffee, keeps on winning, again, and again, and again… and again! (Just for emphasis.) At last year’s international DJ Awards held in Ibiza, Spain, the Umlazi born DJ superstar won a Breakthrough award. At this year’s SAMAs, he dominated by taking home three awards for Album of The Year, Best Dance Album, Best Engineered Album of The Year and added a cherry on top with a special award, the International Achievement Award… And last night, at the BET Awards held at Los Angeles, USA, Black Coffee won the Best International Act: Africa Award.

Black Coffee was nominated amongst AKA (South Africa), Cassper Nyovest (South Africa), Wizkid (Nigeria), Yemi Alade (Nigeria), Serge Beynaud (Côte d’Ivoire), MzVee (Ghana) and Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania). The humble DJ had said on a BET interview that he was “rooting for Wizkid” to win this award because of how hard the Nigerian artist has worked. “I would like to see Wizkid take it. He’s worked hard! I really think he deserves it,” he said. “He’s also done well internationally being featured on Drake’s album and working with Chris Brown,” he added on his reason.

Winning the BET’s Best African Award came as a surprise to him, surely. Since he wasn’t expecting it.

Nkosinathi always strives to inspire the youth through his hard work. Winning this international award is another reminder for us, Africans (Especially the black youth), that it is the time for Africa to rise and “it is possible to succeed with any background,” as he put it on his interview with BET.

His peers and fans congratulated the living legend. Oskido on his Twitter account (@OskidoIBelieve) wrote, “CONGRATULATIONS @realblackcoffee for winning that #BET award. PROUD MOMENT.” A fan (@_Zeemzo) said, “We draw inspiration from you”.
